Summer Fave, Raves and Flops

Sadly, summer is quickly coming to an end. All the munchkins will be back to school next week , the majority of the wedding parties are over and although the weather here is supposed to be nice for the next little while, I’m kind of looking forward to Fall. (don’t hate!!!)…. I’m mainly excited for the fall makeup and clothing trends to start!!:)

Over the past few months I have accumulated a few new products that I either fell madly in love with ( and hope you will too) orrrrrr I found products that I simply wanted to throw in the garbage.

Faves and Raves

Makeup:

Occ Lip Tars– Amazing pigmentation and staying power. These little babies are great! They come in all sorts of fun colors and different finishes. I bought “Hoochie” in the regular size then bought a mini set of 3 in “Pris” “Trollop” and then a primer (which I can’t seem to locate at the moment 😦 . The mini lip brush they come with  and tube applicator make this product easy to mix with each other to make new colors. I plan on getting more on my next Sephora visit. I believe they run around $20?? and will probably last forever because you only need the tiniest amount for full coverage. http://www.sephora.com/obsessive-compulsive-cosmetics

Color Your Smile Lip Gloss from Whitening Lightning in Nude and the Brow Bar to Go in Dark Brown– I’ve seen these used by many Youtubers in the past and when Stephen said I could use his CC to buy whatever I wanted online for my birthday (poor judgement call bf lol) , First I said I wanted a puppy!!!! and after slight whining, I later settled on the next best thing, MAKEUP! (Duh!!!) . The lip gloss is decent. Just your regular ol nude gloss. The packaging has a little light built into the cap which is useful and a tiny mirror on the side. The Brow Bar is definitely worth the hype. It comes with two shades of dark brown, a brow wax and a little brush. Lately I have been reaching for this more then any other brow product I own. Its just so easy and foolproof to use and the color suits me perfectly!  Here is this the link to the site if you are interested http://www.gerardcosmetics.com/

Nudebrow-bar-to-go-both1

Makeup Geek Shadows and Z-pallete– another part of my birthday makeup haul. I received 5 shadows. Cupcake, Crème Brulee, Shimma Shimma, Peach Smoothie and Cinderella. Not only are the names super cute, the colors are very pretty. The color payoff is pretty good and like that they already have magnets to stick in the z-pallete. I will definitely be buying more of these to fill up the pallete, which I might add is a great idea to buy if you travel a lot. These pallets come in all different colors, prints and sizes. I ordered the medium hot pink one. They also send a bunch a magnets if you are depotting your own products to put in it. You just pick which shadows or blushes or powders you want and pop them in and go. This way you don’t have to drag 50 different things around if you are going anywhere. http://www.makeupgeek.com/store/   ZPallettes Link

Younique 3D fiber Mascara– I wrote a review on this a little while back. If I could be in love with a product, this would be it. https://beautyjunkiesanonymous.wordpress.com/2014/07/09/younique-3d-mascara-worth-the-hype/

US-1017-00

Maybelline The Nudes– I searched high and low for this little sucker. For a while, it was sold out or not even put on the shelves yet. I even embarrassingly called a few drugstores and department stores. I finally got my hands on it at Wal-Mart, did a little dance and then proceeded to the check out like a normal human being. This a really great palette for anyone that just wants an everyday look or even a smokey neutral look. Plus, It was only 12 dollars!!! So very affordable, especially if you don’t want to fork out the cash for one of the Urban Decay naked palettes (which I own and love, but one can never have too many neutral colored shadows!!!)

NUDES-Expert%20Wear%20Pallette-Pack

Lancôme Hypnose Star Mascara– I Was always too cheap to buy anything Lancôme till sweet little Lucy (hey girl! 😉 ) gave me the heads up about a sale going on at Shoppers. So naturally, I stopped what I was doing and went and bought two!! They were only $15 each when one is regularly $30 plus I think? I use this everyday and this is what I layer under my Younique Mascara as a base….the two combined= lash heaven!!!!

hypnose

Essence Beach Cruiser Waterproof Liquid Liner in Keep Calm and Go to the Beach (Turquoise) and Sun, Fun and Copper (Coppery Gold) – I think these were like $2 or something ridiculously cheap at Shoppers. They were a last minute find at the checkout. I don’t know about how “waterproof” these actually are, but the colors are very pretty and surprisingly pigmented.

beachcruiseer

Stila Stay all Day 10 in 1 HD beauty Balm– Another Shopper’s sale find! I managed to get this for half off ($15). I either use this alone during the day or under another foundation at night. It does have a different consistency and smell, but I do love the way it looks on the skin and it doesn’t make me break out, so that is always a positive!!!

stila

L’Oreal Visible Lift Blur Foundation in Creamy Natural– Again, another Youtube suggestion. Very light coverage, leaves your skin a bit “glowy” and “dewy”… very affordable and can be found at any Wal-Mart, Shoppers, Target, etc.

Cos34o_6_pack-shot

Sephora Bronzed and Blushing Palette– This comes with a pink and coral blush and one bronzer. I have been using this basically every day and still haven’t put a dent in it! Not overly thrilled with the bronzer part of this, but the colors of the blush are very nice and very summery!  http://www.sephora.com/product/productDetail.jsp?keyword=SEPHORA%20COLLECTION%20Bronzed%20And%20Blushing%20Face%20Palette%20P385618&skuId=1573492&country_switch=ca&productId=P385618&_requestid=98121

Aveda Fire Maple Lip Liner-  This baby is fresh out of the new Fall and Winter 2014 Aveda Collection. Beautiful Red! (my fave color to wear!) I wear it either alone or underneath Relentlessly Red by Mac. At the moment…this is lost somewhere in one of my million purses 😦 (hopefully)

Hair and Body:

Aveda Brilliant Damage Control-  I have had this used in my hair numerous times at work when I have had my hair done and have no idea why I haven’t bought it till now. My hair has always been tangley. I mean Super tangley!! I didn`t think it could get worse…till I started gradually lightening it. Think of what your hair is like when you come in from a wind and rain storm and then throw in some back combing gone wrong and you have what my hair is like on a daily basis. You can not move my hair without it jumbling together. Especially if it is wet. I like to think I have a pretty tough scalp, because when myself or someone brushes it, it is usually a workout!! Anyway, that all being said, this spray is great! It makes brushing my hair much easier and my hair just a bit softer. It also helps protect against any thermal or UV damage!

av_A1KC_254

Nip + Fab Detox Blend Body Wash- This stuff smells amazing. I just stumbled upon this at Winners one day and said “What the heck! I need a new body wash“ The scent is aromatic tea tree, green tea, jasmine and frankincense. I`m not sure where I would be able to find this again when I run out, so if anyone knows where to buy this or other products from the Nip + Fab line, let a girl know! 🙂

nipandfab

FLOPS!  😦 😦

I don`t have many flops for this summer, but the ones I do have, I really don`t like.

Marc Anthony 2nd Day Clear Dry Shampoo- the smell for this is okay, but my hair felt worse and dirtier after I applied this. It felt wet. I love my dry shampoos because I frankly dread “Hair wash day“ so this product was very disappointing. I think I will just stick to my Batiste Dry Shampoo and call it a day.

clar

Maybelline Master Kajal Crème Kohl Liner- wasn`t overly impressed with this at all. I bought the black shade. Didn`t like the pigmentation or the consistency. Maybe it`s just me, but I can`t see myself ever using this.

Onyx-Rush-Master%20Kajal-Pack

Makeup Geek Loose Pigments in New Years Eve and Sweet Dreams- I`m on the fence with these two. I so desperately want to like them because everyone else does…. But I just don`t!! I find loose pigments messy and harder to apply then pressed pigments. The colors really don`t look like the swatches I looked up before I ordered them. Kind of the glad it wasn`t my money that bought them 😦 …Who knows, Maybe I`ll order other colors in the future and like them more…

And there you have it….a very long list of products I’ve either loved or hated over this past summer. Hope this helps if anyone was on the fence about buying any of these things or were just simply interested in looking for new stuff to add to your collection like me 😉

How to Stop Biting your Nails!

First off, sorry for super slacking the last little while. I realized it has been a month since my last post :/

I thought I would discuss something near and dear to my heart tonight. Nail Biting.

I bit my nails since I had my first set of teeth… luckily I skipped over the nose picking stage. ( the combo of the two habits could of potentially scarred me for life. Glad I avoided that one :/ )

I bit my nails till there was nothing left. Till they bled even. It was a bad habit that really affected me.

I was always afraid of meeting new people and having to shake their hands. Even something as little as picking up money off a floor could potentially turn into an embarrassing ordeal.

I remember playing basketball and being scolded after games by my parents for just sitting on the bench and gnawing on my hands.

You see, my bad habit was definitely related to two things….the first and most influential cause was stress and bad nerves. The second was boredom.

I tried everything over the years to stop.

-Band-Aids on every finger…not a cute look and very obvious.

-That gross “No-Bite” nail polish stuff…but if you’re a die hard nail biter/picker like I was, this just gave you more of challenge when biting your nails. Gave me more stuff to pick at when I had my munch sessions.

– Sitting on my hands never helped either, Ma….

-Acrylic Nails….These covered the problem, but when it came time to remove them, I would pick them off. I remember once sitting in the bathroom and using scissors, nail clippers and  everything else to get them off. Needless to say, my nails were in bad shape afterwards and were even more tempting to pick at ( fyi this is before I knew anything about removing false nails, don’t judge this aesthetician!!!)

-Stick on nails from Wal-Mart….These were the best solution I had for a while. They stayed on fairly well and didn’t mess up my nails as bad as the acrylics. I just carried my little thing of nail glue around with me everywhere I went,so no nails would go missing! I was able to keep these on till I started Aesthetics school.

For School and our exams, you had to have clean, short, well manicured hands. Something I did not have. I couldn’t have press on nails on because they could potentially harbour bacteria or not to mention scratch someone’s eye out during a facial.

As the course progressed, No one wanted to be my partner for French Manicure Day 😦 hahahaha I had the shortest nails , both my ring finger nails were basically non existent. I don’t blame the girls for being frustrated when trying to polish my nubby little fingers.

I was told something in school that really stuck in my head. As an aesthetician, people are going to look at you and judge you by your appearance no matter what. If you have crazy messed up makeup, chances are people won’t want you to do theirs and same goes for messed up fingernails. If you can’t make your nails pretty, how can you be trusted to make other’s look pretty. I whole heartedly agree with this. I wear makeup almost every day and try to make myself look presentable. The last step was to fix my nails.

It is an extremely hard habit to break. Most Habits take 30 days to truly break the cycle. I had stopped a couple times in my life before and it lasted less then a month before I was back to mutilating my hands.

When I started my job out of school, I finally put the “nail” in the coffin (get it?!) haha and got my *#@% together and stopped. I believe anyone can stop biting their nails if they truly want to. I wanted to and this is what I did.

1) Try to relax. Anxiety is a big cause to biting your nails. I have definitely mellowed out a bit as I got older and learned to let things go a little easier.

2) Try and keep busy. Boredom was bad news for my nails. Do something while you’re watching tv. Don’t just keep your hands idle.  Knit, read, whatever!! Also, chew gum or mints! That way it’s harder to bite your nails with a wad of Hubba Bubba in your mouth!

3) Get regular manicures. Pamper your poor hands. This will also help with the relaxing part. Your nails need extra work and love. Come hang out with me and get it done. I know people are embarrassed of their nails and hands, but trust me….I’m willing to bet mine were some of the worst bitten nails out there. Wish I had pictures. I really won’t judge and totally “get” the whole issue.

4) Learn how to maintain your nails in between manis. I carried around a nail file, soft buffer and even cuticle nippers for a good while. This way if I got a hang nail, I could nip that sucker off before I would end up biting and bleeding half to death. Dramatic, but hand wounds bleed forever!!!!

5) Invest in some good cuticle oil and hand lotion. Carry that around with you too. Massage oil in every night and use hand cream whenever possible. One of the main reasons you can get hang nails is dry cuticles!!!

6) Wear rings, bracelets, watches, etc. Keep attention on your hands with these things so you are forced to make your nails look a little better.

7) Shellac. Now, being an aesthetician has it perks. One being I can buy and do my own shellac or gel polish manicures. It lasts longer then regular polish ( up to 2 weeks). It’s shiny and pretty. The only way to get it off is to soak it off with acetone polish remover. If you start having this done and you are a nail biter,I have some warnings for you. DO NOT PICK SHELLAC OFF!!! It can take layers off your own nails and do some damage. I love shellac and recommend it to people who are in the process of quitting nail biting, after they have a few regular manicures and get some length to their nails.

8) Know that biting your nails for a long period of time can seriously damage the integrity of your nail, your teeth and gums. A senseless habit is not worth the dental bills.

Now all this being said, some things may not work for you. I have been Nail Biting Free for over two years now and I could never imagine letting myself go back to the way my hands looked. Its a sucky, dirty habit. Go look up some articles on what can be found under your nails on any daily basis..Try and gross yourself out if nothing else works. So much bacteria is living under you nails and you are sticking them right in your mouth when biting them. Yuck!

And there you have it! A few tips that helped me and hopefully will help anyone out there, snacking on their hands as they read this post.
