Brushes on a Budget!

Don’t mind me. I’m just practicing my Spanish for when I move to Mexico. I am not meant for cold weather.

Hope everyone on the East coast went out and bought their milk and treats and are tying them selves down for what is supposed to be a dandy of a snow storm 😦

I figured I could write you guys a little something to read while you are all bundled up. And for all you other people out there in warmer temperatures…I hate you…but only a little. πŸ˜‰

Here is yet another post in response to the request I sent out in Facebook land for blog ideas. My friends did not disappoint and I was left with a mass amount of comments, private messages and texts with questions and concerns people have about the beauty world!

One really good question that stood out was about Makeup Brushes, especially affordable ones. I have yet to discuss this topic here on beautyjunkiesanonymous really, other then the odd favorite or two that I have. I’m a slacker!!! Sorry!! 😦

Hopefully I can cover everything tonight πŸ™‚

If there is one thing to know about makeup brushes is….they are kind of important. They are what paint brushes are to an artist! How are you supposed to create like Leonardo Da Vinci or Van Gough with out the right tools.

I’m not saying you need to run out and buy all sorts of brushes and sponges or whatever. But you do need a good core collection that will make putting on your makeup easier and also, better.

These brushes also don’t have to be uber expensive. There are many brands out there that are decent and a decent price as well.

Some examples of brands I like that can be found either online or in your local stores.

Real Techniques– Created by Youtube Beauty Gurus, these can be found at Walmart or drugstores. There are kits and also individually sold brushes. I do believe that the kits are around $20. That’s a steal in my mind!

Real Techniques also came out with a sponge dupe for the pricey Beauty Blender. I have bought a few of these since I discovered them. OBSESSED!!

Sonia Kashuk- I could cry about this one. Since Target Canada is done like dinner, I’m probably going to go out and buy an excess amount of brushes from this brand. I wrote a post a few weeks ago about a Limited Edition Set that was beautiful. The link to my review can be found here —>

Fellow Canadians, go out and snatch what you can of these brushes before they are gone. You will not regret it.

American friends, continue being the lucky little shits you are and buy this brand. **Shakes fist in anger and disgust**

-Elf- Another brand that can be found at Target ( Why Lord, why?!?!? 😦 ) These are around 2 or 3 dollars and definitely decent for that price and for just beginning your collection.

-Quo-Β When looking at my ever growing brush collection, I have discovered that I have quite a few brushes from this brand, found at Shoppers Drug Mart.

Quo always comes out with limited edition brush sets. Sometimes they shed, sometimes they don’t. It just depends on the luck of the draw. But, I do like these a lot and believe they are worth it.

-Eco Tools-Β although I do not own any of these in my personal collection, I have used them before on clients. They can be found at Walmart and drugstores. Added bonus to this brand, it is an environmentally conscious company for all you Earth Lovers out there! πŸ™‚

Next are two inexpensive brands I have yet to try but want to eventually. If you watch any Youtube videos or read beauty blogs, you have probably heard of them already.

-Morphe Brushes-Β

-Crown Brush-Β

A List of Suggested brushes you should need to create whatever looks you want would be :

– Foundation Brush- whether it is a flat style or Kabuki style(my fave of the two)

-Powder/Bronzer Brush- a Nice fluffy one should do.

-Blush/Contour- there are different variations of these available. I am still searching for the perfect one.

-Eyeliner brush- Your cat eye will become that much better.

-Crease Brush- blend, blend, blend….and repeat.

-Shader Brush/All over shadow brush- self explanatory.

-Pencil brush- for precise shadow application and great to use on the lower lash line

-Eyebrow brush- tame those suckers down.

-Lip Brush- I rarellllyyyyyyyy use one of these on myself (always on clients though), but it is good to use if you find it hard to not get lipstick all over the place.

-Eyelash curler – use before mascara!!

-Sponges- I like using them for concealer. Just a personal preference. You don’t neeeedd to have any.

and there you have it. Affordable Makeup Brushes 101.

Hope that helps and Everyone has a safe and happy Week πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

P.S. There are many nice expensive brands out there ( I own a few) and they are fabulous too. So if you are interested in any here is a quick list : Mac, Aveda, Sephora, Sigma, TIGI, Stila, Etc.

Brows are the New Black !

Cara Delevigne.

If you don’t know who that is… Get off this Page!!!

Jk, but seriously, go look her up. Her and those brows of hers are huge! Big beautiful brows are in! And dear God, I hope they never go away.

One of the most common questions I get asked is “How do I get my brows to grow?” Or “how do I get my brows to look more full?”

Truth is, this is extremely hard to do. I know many people that have either over tweezed or over waxed their brows over their life time. So much abuse usually leads to extremely thin brows or as some would call the dreaded “80’s brow” … You know you have seen these walking around at your local Walmart…..

In laments terms, Once you wax or remove hair from the follicle so many times, hair may not come back at all or only some hair will come back and this can somewhat take a long time.

Another example of why hair may or may not grow back, is due to medical reasons. This is a little trickier. Chemotherapy, Thyroid problems, certain medications, etc can be a cause of thinning brows. In this case, it is best to figure out if these are what is affecting your brows and maybe talk to your Doctor about your options.

If your issues are due to your inability to control yourself when it comes to removing hair, then here are some tips I would suggest in trying to regrow those babies back:

1- Lock up your tweezers and magnifying lamps. Get your husband, mother, brother to lock those suckers up and throw away the key. You are trying to have hair grow back in, not ripping it out of your face with a billion times magnified, lighted mirror glaring back at you. These are bad for anyone’s self confidence and are a death sentence to your Eyebrows LIFE!

2- Find a spa that offers brow shaping with a professional. Ask someone you know with “good eyebrows” where they go. Chances are it’s me! ….HA! Kidding!……but seriously, come see me…….I have a weird brow obsession.

3- Patience is essential to this process….you may have to come in and have your brows cleaned up as often as every two weeks, then progressively moving to every four weeks. This is the sucky part. Your brows are going to look a little out of control for a while, but the end result is worth it! Promise!

3-If your brows are sparse AND light, try out brow tinting, it’ll help make your brows look more defined and filled in.

4- Invest in some good quality products to help you fill in and reshape your brows. Anastasia Beverly Hills (found at Sephora or on her website) are amazing and very popular. I have her “Dip brow pomade”and I love it. Another brand I love is Gerard Cosmetics/Whitening Lightning. I bought their “Brow bar to go” last year and it hasn’t let me down yet.

There are many other brands that have brought out products designed specifically for your brows. There are many options from pomades to pencils to shadows and more. Try them out and see which you prefer the most.
In my experience, powders/shadows are the easiest to begin with. They are the most foolproof of the bunch. Pomades are tricky to get used to, and if your aren’t lucky you can quickly end up looking like this fellow

Exhibit A-image

5-If by chance you are one of the unlucky few that can not grow back your brows, there are some nifty new things out on the market that could be options for you…if you are willing to spend a pretty penny(or nickel, since pennies are non existent now….)

*Eyebrow tattooing- permanent makeup is a great idea, a little pricey but worth it if you can find a really great artist. But be careful with this one please. Do your research and do not get them tattooed on your face by your cousin’s ex husbands friend’s aunt out of her basement shop for a “deal” at $20… You will wish having thin eyebrows was the worst of your problems.

*Eyebrow transplants-YUP…. just like good ol hair plugs….you can have this done.

*Eyebrow toupees- like fuzzy stickers, but better.

*Eyebrow extensions- works the same as eyelash extensions. Medical grade glue is used with extensions and you need to get a fill every two weeks or so. With this, there needs to be at least a little bit of pre existing hair to adhere the extensions to.

*Prescription Lash growth serum- “Lactese” can sometimes be used to help grow back eyebrows just as it was used to help grow back or thicken eyelashes. Talk to your doc about this one, you don’t want to go from hardly any brow to having hair all over your forehead. Bad look.

This is my second post dedicated to eyebrows since I started this blog almost a year ago. I hope it helps if anyone out there is struggling to fit in with this Brow crazy world.

I feel anyone can make their brows better with just a little TLC. Those two little caterpillars on your forehead are essential in making you look human. Do not underestimate the power of “good brows”… Or bad ones.

Take care,
Love & hugs,
Nicole πŸ™‚

Landscaping… And I’m not talking about the bushes in the back yard….

Warning- if you are even Β a little bit easily offended or embarrassed …You might not like this post.(and that’s totally fine)

I recently asked Facebook friends and family to send me some beauty related questions. I am currently putting together a list and coming up with the best possible answers. (Bare with me, the response was great and questions are still coming in, so that post may take a while to go up.)

For this entry, I was asked by a few friends everything there is to know about….. BRAZILIANS!!!! That’s right, Lady-bits Landscaping!

And I’m going to try my best to best to explain what happens from the time you come in for your appointment to the time you leave and everything in between (no pun intended!!)

When you first come into the spa room, you will be asked to undress from the waist down and lay on a table. Throw your inhibitions to the wind if you are coming in for this service. Aestheticians have seen it all and a good one should make you feel comfortable. You will be givin something to cover yourself whether it’s a towel, sheet, robe or even disposable paper thongs ( I would suggest going without the thong, it’s just easier for everyone and doesn’t get in the way. There are ways to cover and drape yourself with the other options that you won’t feel completely bare.)

A Brazilian is typically the removal of all the hair from front to back. Some people opt for a small strip of hair left over in the front, but a lot of people choose to go completely hairless. So make sure you let your waxer know what you prefer before you start.

To make the waxing process easiest on you and the waxer, your hair should be 1/4 an inch or just past the stubbly, stuck up stage. If it’s too short, you will be asked to reschedule for another time. Too short means the wax will not properly grip the hairs and you will not get a clean wax.

If the hair is too long, I would suggest trimming with small scissors before you come in or the waxer will have to do it for you. Too long hair = more difficult! more painful!

When I received my training for this, we started off the service with the client on the table on hands and knees and proceeded to remove the hair in the back and work forward. I find that method a bit unnerving for a lot of clients (especially newbies), so I don’t start that way anymore, but don’t be surprised if some people ask you to be in downward dog when they re enter the room :/

There are two types of waxes that can be used for Brazilians.

Soft wax- a hot wax that is applied and removed with a material cloth.

Hard wax- wax that is applied and left to cool on the skin til it hardens completely. Most people would agree this type is the best for Brazilian waxing because it is more gentle on the skin and more sensitive areas and let’s face it, where we’re dealing with, it’s sensitive. :/

Most treatments are anywhere from 30-60 mins long. Experienced waxers will definitely try to get you waxed and finished fast, but in a safe manner.

A little side note for this service, make sure your waxer is wearing gloves and not double dipping their waxing sticks. This is all for your safety and to prevent cross contamination.

During your session there will be tweezing done for the hairs that would not come out cleanly on the wax strips

In your appointment , you will Β be asked to “hold” in certain places to keep skin taunt to prevent ripping of the skin. You will also be asked to adjust your legs to get in the hard to reach areas.

I had a friend ask “Is there anyway to get the hair in the back without getting on all fours?” And there is!! You can either lay on your back and pull you legs/knees up or lay on your side or lie on your stomach and hold your buttocks. Surprisingly enough, this is the part that hurts the least but is definitely the part most women find scary. No worries though, it’s usually one of two quick strips and your done. If you are getting the front done, might as well clean up the back.

If you are absolutely terrified about the pain, it’s not as bad as you think. Sure it hurts, you are yanking hair from your nether regions!!! It’s bearable. Try to relax, things hurt more when you are tense and stressed.

Also try not to book your waxing right before or during your period. We tend to be sookier around that time and more sensitive.

Once you are done, you will be given an after wax/calming solution. Β Rebook for 4-6 weeks and that’s it! You’re like brand new!

Another question I received was “what is vajazzaling? And “what is a Vajacial?” And well, the answer to that is they are services done after you would have your Brazilian waxing complete.

Everyone remembers their “Bedazzlers” as a child. You added rhinestones to clothing, shoes, etc. Vajazzaling is pretty much the same. Adding temporary gems and sparkles down there.

A “Vajacial” is basically a facial for your lady bits. Cleanse, toned, exfoliated, treatment masks applied, etc. Just skincare for down there……

I can honestly say I have yet to have to do either of these treatments. I feel these are probably more popular in Hollywood and are not very common in our small little town.

Hope this answered the questions of the few girls who messaged me!

I’m pretty well an open book on this stuff and nothing really surprises me anymore. It’s weird. I used to be the most shy person in the world and I’m pretty sure “Brazilian waxer” was not what I answered as a five year old on what I wanted to be when I grew up. But I assure you, it’s probably not the worst job in the world…like an accountant or something…ewww…

Sonia Kashuk All That Jazz Limited Edition Brush Set Review

A little heads up here, this set is no longer in stores, but I will review it anyway just in case you want to buy any of her other brushes out there.

Price- I believe this was $30-40 at Target:/ I bought it with other things and no longer can find the receipt. But it was in that price range.

What it includes – 10 gold and black handled Sonia Kashuk Brushes. Ranging from powder, blending, foundation, eye shadow, lip and brow brushes.

I have used all but two of being the paddle foundation brush I gave to my mother because I never use that type to apply makeup. Just personal preference. The other being the eyebrow brush because I would much rather if it was a “spooly” style one.

My favorites of the bunch would have to be the buffing brush (second from left in picture). I have been using it to apply my foundation lately and I really like how it works. I also really like the short bristle pencil brush (fourth from the right) I used this to apply shadow on the lower lash line and outer v of my eyelid.

For the price, Sonia Kashuk Brushes are pretty dam good. These are not the first I have bought from the line and certainly won’t be the last. There was hardly any shedding of the bristles, which is really nice and well, they are just so darn pretty.

If you need a decent set of makeup brushes, keep you eye out for her next sets or you can just buy them individually wherever you can find her cosmetics!

and there you go. My third post of the evening. I am trying to make up for the lack of posts over the last month!

New Years Makeup!

Its funny what some well applied makeup, different picture angles, a smile and a decent camera (camera man πŸ˜‰ ) will do for you! LOL!

I wanted to take a before and after picture before we went out to celebrate New Years.

I used my Kat Von D mini Studded Lipstick in “Sexer” and I loveeeeeed it! New favorite hot pink!

I also used some Stila Magnificent Metal eye shadows and some glitter from Lit Cosmetics.

This was very much a rush job and I wasn’t 110% satisfied how my eyes came out, but that’s okay! I just wanted to show the difference in my skin. πŸ™‚

If you haven’t fainted from fright from the before picture…thanks! :p haha

Hoping to do more of these in the future if I can get my act together while getting ready!

Christmas Beauty Faves!

Greetings and Happy New Year everyone!!! πŸ™‚

Hope 2015 is off to a great start for everyone (despite the weather today here in Sydney) and that Santa brought you lots of nice goodies for Christmas! πŸ™‚

I had a wonderful time with family and friends and was a tad bit spoiled this year πŸ˜‰ … I finally got an Ipad (thanks Parents!) and I bought myself a nice camera at the crazy Boxing day sales with the Christmas gift cards and money from relatives I received. Soooo that all being said,Β hopefully having both these things means I will try to blog more! This post is far over due!! Sorry!!!!!

For Christmas, I also received quite a few new beauty products!! and I’m going to share a few of them with you bellow πŸ™‚

Too Faced Limited Edition Everything Nice Palette and Kat Von D’s Studded Kiss Lipstick set.image (65)

First off, Love the packaging for both of these right off the top. Both perfectly cute in their own way.

The Everything Nice pallet comes with a variety of really pretty colour options for eye shadows, some mini makeup brushes, instructions, a few blushes and a bronzer (which smells like chocolate too, fyi πŸ˜‰

photo (10)

It also comes with a pink sparkly makeup bag and a mini “Better Then Sex” mascara. (neither of which I have pictures of because I can not find them at the moment 😦 … I Really need to go through my Christmas goodies and put them away/organize!)

I received this bad boy from my awesome bf….who braved Sephora all by himself one day and found this! He’s a good boy.

The Kat Von D Lipsticks are definitely some of my favorite formulations in lipsticks. I already have one full size lipstick that I bought back in the fall in the colour “Love Craft” Β and when I heard they were coming out with a set, I asked my lovely mother for this on my “Sephora wish list’…

This set comes with 9 different shades ranging from nude to red to purple.

image (66)

The size of these are so cute it hurts. Only problem is, I’m afraid I will use them up too quickly or lose them. Both are very possible….. Where do all my lost lipsticks go anyway? Probably where all the lost bobby pins, earrings and matching socks go 😦 …RIP

Lush Curly Wurly Coconut Shampoo

I have bought Lush skin care products before and I loved them. So it was a pleasant surprise to receive this as part of my gift from my sister.

image (63)

I hardly wear my hair straight anymore and love any products that help enhance any waves in my hair. This stuff smells good enough to eat and I was actually surprised how good my hair felt after using it. Two thumbs up for this one Sis! Thanks! πŸ™‚

I was given various other beauty products such as a small Sephora eye shadow pallet, some Aveda shampoo, nail polish,a pretty Lord and Taylor personal manicure kit,Β more Dulce and Gabana Light Blue perfume (Love in a bottle!! take my word!!!) , Bath and Body works soaps (one can never have enough), Joe Fresh Lip gloss, more Sephora Sheet masks (love these!) and various other little things.

I was blessed with people who know and understand that all they need to get me is anything beauty related and I will be happy. πŸ™‚

Hope you all have a great Sunday evening… I know I sure will. Stephen bought the full series of “Alf” from Amazon…and that’s all I plan on doing when he gets home!!! and maybe all I’ll do tomorrow (don’t judge me!)..if this yucky weather continues.
