Makeup Colour Combos

With Valentines Day around the corner… Its time to play matchmaker!
…With eyeshadows and lipstick colours that is. But you probably already figured that out by the title anyway. ❀️
This little post was a requested one (Hi Beth ;)) and I will try my hardest to make these combos as wearable as possible.
You see, I have a hard time following rules when it comes to makeup for myself, I say wear whatever colours you want, whenever you want!) but for the colour shy or colour confused person, these are some great guidelines πŸ™‚
-Red lipstick.

Gold eyeshadow, bronze eye shadow or really any metallic looks great with this classic shade.
-Nude lips go well with dark, smokey black or grey eyes, or bright multi coloured eyes. It keeps all the attention on your eyeballs.
-Light Pink lips + blue liner or shadow. Retro chic. A little scary but if done right it can be very pretty and fresh looking.
-Purple lip.

It would be good to pair this bold shade with neutral tones and simple eyes. Taupes would be a good match!
-Black, Blue, Grey or any unconventional lip colour!

My faves πŸ˜‰

PS: Not for the shy!

Pair with minimal eye makeup, or just a bold, black winged eyeliner. These lip colours are attention grabbers by themselves and shouldn’t have too much colour on the eyes to compete with.
-Bright pink lips go great with neutrals, or even pastels such as soft lavenders and lilacs.
-Coral on the lips pairs well with warm shadows such a gold and champagne. This would be an awesome summer combo with bronzed skin too fyi πŸ˜‰
-Dark berries and burgundy lips. Greys, taupes and neutrals are a nice match to this look at me shade!
-Peach lips and emerald green eyeshadow would be a fun and unexpected pairing of colour.
-Brown or the popular Kylie Jenner Mauve lip pairs well with brown and neutral shadows. Super wearable for everyday and screams 90’s!!
I think that covers most shades? If there are any more let me know in the comments.
When in doubt with colour, take a quick look at a colour wheel. Understanding a bit about colour theory, contrasting and complimentary colours will help a great deal when applying your makeup.

Here is a link : http://www.tigercolor.com/color-lab/color-theory/color-theory-intro.htm

Also, have fun. Making mistakes is what its all about. You need to practice to find out what works best for you. There are so many great colours out there at your disposal. And the rules are constantly being thrown out the window! Your face is your artwork and art shouldn’t be taken too seriously. At Least, I think so anyway. πŸ˜‰
Hope everyone enjoyed this little blurb and also, has a super Superbowl Sunday… I checked out after halftime. Coldplay, Beyonce, Bruno Mars, dance offs, fireworks. You just can’t top that.

Plus, I finished my food by then and figured there wasn’t much left to look forward to after that. :p
Cheers!

Winter Beauty Survival Guide

Truth be told, Winter sucks.

But your skin and hair don’t have to suffer. Im going to discuss some of my favourite tips, tricks and products for surviving winter and making you look like a less annoying, but equally pretty Winter Princess like Elsa. (And NOPE! I still don’t want to build that snowman, I’d much rather build a sandwich and polish my nails indoors k, thanks!)

Tip 1- Even though they feel amazing, especially on really cold days, super hot showers suck the moisture and goodness out of your skin and hair. If you insist on making your showers hot as Hades, keep them short and sweet people.

Tip 2- Just because your feet are hidden away in socks, doesn’t mean you have to stop looking after them from October till July. NEWS FLASH! Your toes need love for 12 months! What is the point of looking after them religiously for just a bit of the year and then forgetting about them for the rest?! This is especially true for people who have major dryness, cuticle buildup, calluses and health concerns.

If I hear one more person tell me they are quitting pedis till spring, I may scream. Get a pedi! You don’t have to do the polish thing if you don’t want to face the cold barefoot in sandals, but please, a little buffing and lotion will go a long way.
3- Exfoliate.

I love a good body and face scrub. Everyone should exfoliate all year, but it is very important during the colder months when skin can look dry, flakey and dull. Use at least once a week.

Some of my favourite products for the body are :

Aveda’s Smoothing Body Polish

Aveda’s Aqua Therapy Salts

Lush Rub, Rub, Rub Body Scrub

Scrub Inspired Oatmeal Coffee scrub (I use this both for my face and body. Smells amazing and is great for different issues such as acne, cellulite, etc.)

For Face:

Aveda’s Tourmaline Skin Refiner

Vichy Normaderm 3 in 1 scrub, cleanser and mask (one of my all time favourite products of life!!)

Lush Herbalism (smells like grass, but it works!)
Tip 4- You also have to exfoliate your lips! I touched on this tip a bit in my “How to pull of a Red lip” post a few weeks ago!

Exfoliating your lips is important, especially if you wear lipsticks. This prevents your lips looking like a flaky hot mess. Lush makes some great lip scrubs, but you could also make your own using honey or coconut oil with a little sugar. πŸ™‚
Tip 5- Chances are, you are drinking more coffee and tea this time of year. Therefore, you are probably more dehydrated then normal. Make sure you are drinking more water then caffeinated beverages. Its a hard task, believe me, this addict knows. But water makes everything look and feel much better.
Tip 6- Moisturize. Everything.

Sounds pretty self explanatory right?
You’d be surprised at how many people actually don’t.

Use a deep conditioning hair mask in shower to help your poor dry strands. (Aveda makes some awesome ones, I’m currently using the Be Curly Detangling mask, but they have a few more just depending on your hair type and needs.)

Use a body and face moisturizer right out of shower. Applying moisture on skin while its still somewhat damp helps with absorption.

Use cuticle oil on fingernails and toenails. CND solar oil or Aveda Beautifying oils are my favourites.
Tip 7- Along with exfoliating your lips, you need to treat them too. Vaseline is not the answer here folks!!!!! It may feel good while its actually on, but it isn’t doing a dam thing to help your dry lips. Its a barrier that will just sit on top. Use something that will actually absorb and moisturize. I recently discovered Bioderma Moisturizing stick! It seriously saved my poor pucker. Under $10 for two of them!!!!
Hope this little post helps with some of your winter beauty woes.

What are some of your tips, tricks and products you use through the winter months?

Gotta go! I’ve got a hot date with the tv and my onesie.

Till next time peeps,

Contouring & Highlighting for Dummies

(For the record, I am one of those dummies.)

Contouring and highlighting is something I have yet to completely master. However , I have been asked to write a post on the topic and I am going to try my darnedest to give you all the information I’ve got.
Contouring is one of those things that if it’s done right, it makes a person’s face look sculpted, proportional and symmetrical.

If it’s done wrong, one can look like a muddy, blotchy mess. This has happened many of times to me. I usually don’t realize this till I see myself in a picture after going all day thinking I look like the bomb.com!! Soo, sooo wrong 😦
The tricks are to find the right products and tools to help you achieve those nice high cheek bones, small forehead, tiny nose and strong jaw line.

And also to understand the basics of shadows(contouring) and light(highlighting).

If you want to disguise or make something look smaller or more sunken in, you contour (add shadows/dark colour) .
If you want to bring out something and put emphasis on it, you highlight. (Add brightness/light colours)
Pretty simple right?
If you understand this concept, you can contour and highlight your face. It just takes practise to make it look perfect!
Since these techniques have become more common and more mainstream, a lot of companies have developed products for the everyday woman.
There are powder and cream options. It’s just personal preference on what you would like to use.

I prefer to use creams first and then setting them with powders in similar shades. Double the work but double the pay off!!!! πŸ™‚

Recent favourites I have been reaching for are:
Cream – Stila Contouring kit, Maybelline Foundation Stick in Coconut, Maybelline Better Skin Concealers ( in fair or light)
Powder- Kat Von D Shade and Light pallet , NYX Taupe Blush( yes, a blush!) The Balm Bahama Mama Bronzer, Too Faced Chocolate Soliel Bronzer. Besame vanilla brightening powder, The Balm Betty Lou Luminizer highlight powder and Mac’s soft and gentle.

Contouring and highlighting can be tricky because everyone’s face shapes are not all alike. I have an oval face. Meaning, it is more long then it is wide. I have deep dark undereye circles and I’m not a fan of my nose. The above  picture is generally how I cream contour. I apply my primer, foundation then my darker contour shades and light concealers.

Once you figure out what placement of colours works best for you, the next step is Key;

BLEND, BLEND, and BLEND Some more! When you think you are done blending, blend it again!  Whether you use brushes or sponges, it’s up to you! I really like Stila’s double ended contour brush and Real Techniques Beauty blender sponge. I also use a Mac contour brush I have had for years and the # has worn off 😦

face shapes and a general guide to contouring

I hope this helps anyone that is nervous or someone who is not clear on how contouring and highlight works. I could ramble on and on with this topic, but I’ll spare you the torture and tell you to go to YouTube and watch tutorials on it. That is how I was taught. Practise makes perfect with this, so try it out. πŸ™‚

The Power of a Red Lip; a How to Guide to pulling it off Right!

imageA holiday makeup essential and a boyfriends worst nightmare.

Red lips.

For most, it is as scary and intimidating as standing in front of a crowd in one’s undergarments.

It screams “Look at me!”

If worn correctly ( & confidently) it is beautiful and flattering.
If worn incorrectly, it is a quick way to make your teeth look like something out of a horror movie.

Red Lips are timeless. Some of the most iconic celebrities and historic figures have dawned the bold lip such as Marilyn Monroe, Queen Elizabeth 1, Dita Von Teese, Gwen Stefani, just to name a few. It is a colour of power, confidence and style.

I figured with the holidays upon us, this would be the best opportunity to help you try out this festive colour.

For day to day wear, pair it with your regular neutral eye look. If you want to be really bold, pair it with a dark smokey eye at night. Or if you want to play on the safer classic side, pair it with a simple wing liner.

One of the essential things to carrying this look off is to make sure your skin is looking its best. The only downfall of red lips is it can emphasize imperfections . Look after your skin, use your proper skin care and then cover those dark circles and breakouts ASAP!!!

The best red lips are achieved in a few easy steps and if I havent lost you already with my rambling, read below for some more great tips!

1- Make sure your lips are flake free. This is essential, especially if the red lip you chose is of the matte formula family. Crumbly lips are not sexy and are magnified more by colourful lips.

When washing your face and prepping skin for all of your other makeup, exfoliate with a gentle lip scrub, wash cloth or soft toothbrush. Then apply a conditioning lip balm or lip mask and leave it on as you apply the rest of your face. Just like the rest of your makeup, you need to start off with a good, healthy base.

2- Using a lip liner should not be negotiable with red lipstick. Unless you are going for that smeared all over your face, teeth and anyone that comes within ten feet of you look, then go ahead, skip it!
Line and fill in your lips carefully with a colourless or matching red liner. Over Lining the lips is optional. I prefer not to go too overboard with this step as it can quickly turn from nice Kylie Jenner to crazy blow up doll. (some would argue Kylie looks that way though too, so whatever. We can agree to disagree. I like all the Kardashian/Jenners, so sue me!!!!)

3-Choose your right shade of red. Blue based or cool tone reds are the most universally flattering. They even make your teeth appear whiter… And who doesn’t love that?! Orangey reds are a little trickier, but they can be beautiful on tanned or darker skins tones. I love both depending on the day and the look I want to go for. You pick!!!

4- Apply your lipstick. Whether it is glossy, matte or somewhere in between, it really doesn’t matter. All give different affects and have different benefits.

Glossy is super eye catching, more moisturizing and makes lips appear to look a little larger. Only downfall is, it tends to bleed, fade and smear faster.
Matte is dramatic, classic and has longer lasting capabilities. Matte formulas are definitely my favourite in any colour lips. The only negative is they can be drying.

Some brands I love for their Reds are; Stila, Aveda, Milani, Mac and Maybelline. Both high end and drugstore! So there is a pricepoint for everyone πŸ™‚

5- Clean up. Here is step a lot of people skip (myself included sometimes! *face palm*) If you aren’t applying your lipstick on the fly in your rearview mirror, try taking a concealer brush and a little bit of foundation or concealer and clean up the edges. This also helps with bleeding.
-Blot. Use a tissue and blot lips to remove access.
-Another trick to prevent this is using the “Finger trick”. Place index finger in between lips/mouth, close and pull it out. This will remove any lipstick that is lurking on the inner part of your lips from getting on your teeth and will save you from any embarrassing moments.

Hope that helps anyone who is on the fence about trying something new and a little bit intimidating. You may find out certain colours don’t work on you, and thats part of the fun. Makeup is all trial and error and lots of practice. Try not to take it too seriously! Christmas and New years are the perfect time to try new things, just do it! πŸ™‚

P.S. If I may address my absence from this blog, it has been 6 long months since my last entry! Extremely sorry!!!!! I have had a busy few months moving and making our house a home. Summer is always crazy working in the Spa industry and life has got in the way. In the past few weeks, a few people have brought up the neglect of my blog. Β I will try to post more, more often. I have accumulated many ideas and feel my 6 month writers block is finaly over! Yey!!!!!!!

Summer Essentials

Summer Beauty Essentials: Top 5 drugstore/ Top 5 High Endimage

Hey there folks! πŸ™‚

Summer is finally upon us and life has become very busy and somewhat hectic! (Work wise and personally!)

So let’s just get in to it shall we?!

Here is a quick post on my Top 5 Summer Essentials!! (Drugstore & High End versions)

Drugstore

1- Loreal Infallible Makeup Extender Setting Spray( now there’s a long title!)
I have been using this in place of my beloved Urban Decay setting sprays and I love it. The price is right and It will especially be good for the summer months when you want to really lock in your face makeup and also give yourself a nice cooling mist!

2- Maybelline Brow Drama Sculpting Brow Mascara
This bad boy comes in clear and also hair colour shades. I bought mine in “Deep Brown”
This is perfect for those lazy (and hot) summer days when you don’t want to worry about filling in your brows so precisely but also don’t want to leave them looking unkept. The lasting power is pretty impressive too! Definitely a summer essential!

3- Loreal Infallibe Pro Matte Foundation
If you are anything like me, you can somewhat turn into an oil slick in the summer. I have heard many good things about this foundation, told my mother to try it out and then I finally purchased it after she said she liked it. It’s a Demi-matte finish that doesn’t look or feel overly cakey. For a drugstore foundation, it isn’t too shabby! πŸ˜‰

4- NYX Wonder Pencil
This little fella can be used as a concealer, eye brightener and reverse lip liner ( says the packaging) An extra bonus is it can be used to help carve out and highlight your eyebrows! Multi use products in the busy summertime can be your best friend!

5- Maybelline Master Prime Primers
These come in three different formulas that you can choose based on your skin and the affect you want to achieve. I purchased the “Blur and Illuminate” for a healthy glow. There is also a “Blur and Smooth” and “Blur and Redness control” which I think would be great, especially if you get too much sun and your face looks kind of lobster-ish πŸ˜‰

High End

1- Aveda Tidepool Eye Definer
Pops of colour are huge for the hotter months. Aveda’s Spring/summer 2015 are definitely evidence of that! The easiest way to achieve thhis look is with a little blue eyeliner, either on the top or lower lash line!

2- Mac Gingerly Blush
This is an easy way to add a little summer colour to your face . I have been obsessed with this blush since I was given it. It’s somewhat of a shear peachy or “ginger” colour. I find it is neutral enough to go with any makeup look ( especially that pop of blue eye liner I just mentioned πŸ˜‰ )

3- Bourjois Healthy Balance Unifying Powder
If you have read any of my previous blogs, you’d know I love my foundation from this brand! So naturally I went out and purchased the powder as well! It’s soft and matte finish will be perfect for when the temperatures start to rise and the makeup starts to melt!

4- The Balm’s Mary Lou Manizer Highlighter
This is not just a summer essential, but a LIFE ESSENTIAL! Beautiful highlighter, but be warned, this stuff is highly pigmented. A little goes a long way! ET will be able to spot your glowing cheekbones from space!! Ps..this doubles as a beautiful eyeshadow! You’re welcome!!!!!

5- Aveda’s Dragon Fruit Nourish-mint Lip Liner in Dragon Fruit
Second product from the Spring/summer 2015 Rare Bloom Collection. Beautiful pink liner that I use all over as more of a lipstick.

Bonus Favourite!
Last week I took a very exciting course in scalp massage! Our instructor, Andrea Olivera was amazing! Along with using Aveda products, we got to use some of her very own product line! Me, being a product junkie had to purchase one of her botanical perfumes! “Magdalina” is my new favourite scent. I am obsesseddddddd with it and seriously need to slow down on spraying it before I run out too fast!

Anyway,

Hope you enjoyed this little post. It feels good to write again (more then a month off is too long)

Take Care!

Colour Pop Cosmetics Review

  Hi there,

Remember me?

 You probably don’t.

I’m that super slacking beauty blogger that hasn’t posted anything in a very, very long time. I have no good excuses other then I have been extremely lazy lately and I have also tried to slow down on making sooooo many beauty purchases. I’ve got to put myself on a budget if the boyfriend and I will be buying/moving into our OWN HOUSE in June. πŸ™‚ Yipppeeee!!!!!

With a new home in the works and one of the bedrooms already assigned as a walk in closet/makeup room, I’m almost contemplating doing mini video tutorials and pictorials….this is a big maybe though. I hate how I look/sound on camera…so we shall see.

So enough rambling about me, lets  get into it and on to discuss one of my new favourite companies/ product lines.

Colour Pop Cosmetics Lippie sticks, lippie pencils and eyeshadows.

If you watch any YouTube beauty gurus you probably have heard of this Brand. if you haven’t, I’m going to tell you all about it!  πŸ™‚

Alright, so even though these were one of my recent faves, I have one complaint just to put out there before anyone buys them. The shipping costs and time were brutal. For such inexpensive products ( between $5 and $8) the shipping is $15! Which is a bit high if you ask me. The way to make it a little more justifiable would be to buy quite a large order, which I did of course! πŸ˜‰  Also, I don’t know if it was just my particular order or not, but it took almost a month to receive my little babies. Wayyyyy too long for a makeup obsessed girl who checked the tracking #…. every. single. day.  :/
With all of that out of the way, let’s get into the positives shall we? πŸ™‚

My order included 8 of their shadows, 5 lip liners and 4 Lippie sticks.

The eyeshadows are a bouncy cream consistency at  first and dry to a powder finish . They are very unique in their texture and the pigmentation is awesome.

The best way to apply these that I have figured it out through trial and error is to use your fingers rather then a brush.  Of course you can use a brush if you prefer, but you will need to layer the product to get the most colour. I would recommend a densely packed brush ( some what stiffer bristles) if you are going to go this route.

The colours I purchased were;

Bae, Mittens (Fave!), Girl crush,  Sequin (Fave!), Chipper, Hanky Panky, Kimono, Ibiza (Fave!)

The Lippie sticks come in a few different finishes such as matte and satin.  I really like the way that these apply. They come in a twist up pen that is much thinner then your conventional lipstick. I find this makes for easier application.

Colours I purchased;

Wet (dupe for Mac’s Viva Glam Rihanna), Flawless, Bunny and Heart on.

I don’t know if you notice or not,  but all the names are pretty fun!! πŸ˜‰

These lippie sticks also have some pretty good lasting power as well.  Definitely worth the $5!!!

The lip liners

Colours – Wet, Bunny, Flawless, Heart on and Bull Chic.

I bought all the matching lip liners for the Lippie sticks plus an extra one to match a black lipstick I already own. These are creamy and easy to apply as well.

After I had already ordered my things, Colour pop released their blushes and soon will be releasing their highlighters. Both are said to have that cream/powder texture that the shadows have. They cost just a bit more($8) and bigger then the shadows. I will definitely be making another order to get my hands on some of these. πŸ˜‰ or if anyone wants to give them to me as a gift I would love them forever. πŸ˜‰

Above: wearing “Mittens” shadow all over.

Above: wearing “Ibiza” on lower lash line.

Above:  “Wet” Lippie pencil and stick on lips and a bit of “Girl crush” on eyes.
